The unexpected snow showers we had midday and the magazine coverage
by Rika for a Japanese 4 wheel drive magazine, “American 4 Wheel Traction”,
highlighted our return trip to Mt. Besak. She loved it and hopefully
we’ll get copies of the article when it comes out. As for the trip
itself the trail is pretty easy with only two real obstacles that challenge
you.
Trevor likes mud
The first is a rocky section that we made last year with a number of
large rocks that we stacked up. If you screw up to the right it will
put your passengers side door into a tree. If you fall off the rocks
then your probably gonna get high centered and bash up a drive shaft or
two. You can also take the go around to the left if you like.
The only real problem we had on this obstacle was Paul in his early bronco.
He got tangled up on the rock and managed to trash his transfer case skidplate,
exhaust pipe and muffler.

The next obstacle is the optional side knoll. It has 3 possible
ways up it and on the middle line only Eric in the Orange Krush, Bob in
the Howler, and Rocky in his YJ made it up. The most interesting
approach was by Rocky. While trying rock ledge before the knoll he
slid to the right and hit a dead tree hard enough to break off a top section
of the tree and it came down on his hood. It also caused Mark Silverman
to do a quick exit stage right. I haven’t seen someone move so fast
in a long time.

After getting everyone through this leg of the trail we headed on back
to the beginning of the trail and took the fork towards the overlook.
We took the wrong leg and had to turn a few of the rigs around but managed
to get to the overlook without too much fuss. There now is a housing
subdivision on what used to be a wooded area. After spending a few
minutes admiring the view we headed on back towards the last leg of the
trail towards the ski slope. But before we got everyone turned around
a few people decided to create their own trail back. I personally
didn’t see this but was told about it later. People, we don’t need
to do this especially when there is a reporter present. Let’s use
our heads please…

The last leg of the trip came to a sudden stop when Abe’s gas tank started
leaking fuel and he pulled off to the side and the rest of the crew did
the last leg and pulled back around and down the mountain. Those
interested in playing in the mud did so at the mud pit. I had enough
and headed on back down the mountain and to Jacoby’s to air up and get
ready for a good dinner with the famous hamburger soup on the salad bar.
So until next month at the Junkyard Trail this is Wilbur saying 'Happy
Trails to You'.
